PROOF OF FUNDS

It is worth noting that your proof of sufficient funds must cover your tuition and living expenses for at least one year in Canada. In addition to the cost of tuition, you should have at least CAD 20,635 available to cover your living expenses; if travelling with your spouse or partner, you must add a minimum requirement of CAD 5,055 and CAD 5,893 for each accompanying dependent child. If using a sponsor, preferably should be your parent, spouse/partner, or employer, you will need to show proof of relationship and their source of income.

You could also have multiple sponsors, like parents plus spouse or parents plus partial scholarship. Your sponsor should not just have the precise amount you need for your tuition and living expenses in the account. They should have that amount over what you need. Even if they are your parents, it will not be convincing to say that all they have is what they give you. They have other financial obligations as well. You can explain this in your Letter of Intent.

LETTER OF INTENT FOR A CANADIAN STUDY PERMIT JOURNEY

In your Letter of Intent, similar to your statement for school admission processing, you can explain each document enclosed in your application, where necessary. This letter of intent is more like the interview you do for visa processing when applying to other countries like the USA. But this time, you are not in front of a visa officer asking questions about yourself. Instead, you are asking yourself these questions and putting down the honest answers in a letter. When writing your letter of intent, you should start by talking about yourself and your academic and professional background, but there is no exact structure. We advise that you show progression. You should also ask yourself these questions and have detailed answers for them:

1. What has inspired me to go on this academic journey?
2. Why did I choose to study in Canada?
3. Why have I applied to the program and school?
4. What are my plans after this program in Canada is over?
5. How do I intend to fund this journey?

If you can comfortably and honestly provide detailed answers to these questions, you have successfully shown the Visa Officer that you are a worthy recipient of a Canadian study permit. Ensure that your letter is structured, clear, and concise.

There are other things to note when starting your Canadian study permit journey, and they include:

1. Include a certified translation with any document not in English or French.

In applying for a Canadian study visa, your chosen program must align with your educational background or employment. • PROOF OF FUNDS/FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Proof of financial support is integral to the success of a Canadian study visa application. IRCC wants to be sure that you have the money to pay your tuition fees, cover your living expense, and pay for your trip to Canada. If you are traveling with family members or dependents, you must show that you can cater to their needs.

A six-month bank statement showing your financial status is usually required. If the Canadian government is not convinced that you can support yourself, a refusal is impending. Showing the money does not mean that you will have to spend it. You only need to show the Canadian government that the funds are available to you, should you need them.

• TRAVEL AND IDENTITY DOCUMENT

To get a Canadian study visa, applicants must show a complete record of their travel history and identity documents. Applying with unclear history and documents will automatically lead to a study permit refusal. IRCC uses this to identify those who are criminally and medically inadmissible to Canada. Your records must be clean, easy to read, and as transparent as possible. 

• LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE

You need to have an acceptance letter from a registered Canadian educational institution before you can apply for a study permit. Before applying for a Canadian study visa, you must ensure that the school you were accepted to is on the list of designated learning institutions. Some fake schools are issuing falsified acceptance letters to students. Many of which collect application and tuition fees from students. 

Students are advised to check the DLI list to be sure that they are registered schools. One’s letter of acceptance will be refused once the visa officer realizes that it is not genuine. Always go the extra mile to ensure that the acceptance letter given to you is genuine and from a registered school. Proofread all school-related documents and ensure that they are straightforward and easy to read. Also, provide enough supporting or additional documents as you can.

Scholarships in Canada are among the most frequently asked questions we receive every day and we figure we could help people simplify what is currently available in Canada.

Undergraduate Level

Most colleges and universities have a financial aid office. The financial aid office publishes scholarships and bursaries and for some, there are some departmental scholarships. Most of these scholarships come from organizations, foundations/NGOs, or universities themselves. The reasons for awarding them vary widely. We may award them based on merit. It means good WAEC and high school results for Nigerian students. These awards can be for leadership, sports, and sometimes even for issues related to justice or war in a country. Those will be country-specific. Typically, this is for the undergraduate level.

Some schools may grant as low as $500 or as high as 100% in scholarships. These 100% scholarships often have two to five recipients.

Then 50% may also have you two to ten recipients, and then there’ll be a large pool of scholarships given to students who meet a particular grade. For instance, maybe you have an 80 percentile in your academic results, and you’ll be eligible for 2000 or 3000 off your tuition. That is how most scholarships work. While there are other hidden secrets involved in scholarships, you’ll need to book a consultation to get some more information on that.

Postgraduate Level

It is similar at the postgraduate level. Most of the time, it depends on merit. Your chances of getting a merit scholarship at the postgraduate school will depend on whether you have a first-class or a good 2.1.

At the postgraduate level, the funding available is for research programs, thesis programs that require you to do research. Schools and professors have funding from various sources set aside, so you need to be employed there to be eligible for the award. They would pay you a stipend; part of that stipend could take care of your school fees. So you have to be set for maybe even 80 to 90% or even 100% of what you will need while you are doing research, and it will take between two to three years, and if you’re going for a direct Ph.D. it may even take up to five years. This applies to both the postgraduate and doctorate levels. Students will get funding based on research that fits. You just need to research the school you’re interested in, what you have, what the school requires, and apply.
