A much faster Canadian study permit application process (Nigerian Student Express program) was introduced into the Nigerian/Canadian study application system in 2020. This program was introduced to process Nigerian students’ applications for Canadian study permits within a short period (20 days). The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was formerly the system in place for this process. With a long processing time, the SDS remains stringent thus, the need for the NSE.

NSE VERSUS SDS

Despite the introduction of the NSE, Nigerian students can still apply for a Canadian study permit under the Student Direct Stream.  Registration under either of the two is done with the IRCC system. Here are some differences to note between both programs:

• PROOF OF FUNDS: The SDS requires that applicants purchase a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of CAD 10,000 as well as provide proof of full payment of tuition fees for the applicant’s first year of study. 
  • As such, the average financial commitment for SDS was approximately 43,623 CAD in the first year of study.

• BANK STATEMENTS: Evidence of existing funds is a key requirement for a Canadian study permit. This evidence is provided using bank statements. The Nigerian Student Express program uses the mybankstatement electronic system which has affiliations with most banks. Paper-based bank statements is a major requirement under the Student Direct Stream program.

• • The Nigerian Student Express program requires that the applicant provides proof of funds of CAD 30,000. The NSE does not require proof of paid tuition. 
• PROCESSING TIME: Standard processing time for a Canadian study permit under the SDS is 4 weeks. But could take about 4 months. Whereas, the NSE processes Canadian study permit in 20 days.

• MEDICAL REPORT: While processing your Canadian study permit, the NSE requires that you provide an upfront medical examination and include the result in your application. The SDS does not require this.
• LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: NSE demands that IELTS be written with a minimum score of 6. Whereas, SDS does not require IELTS from applicants. This is where many students may have an issue with applying under the Nigerian Student Express program.

Who can apply for a Canadian study permit?

• Be in good health and show a willingness to take a medical examination, if required.
• A candidate who can prove and convince the immigration officers that they will leave Canada after their authorized stay.

Who is eligible for Canada’s Nigerian Student Express Program?

The NSE and SDS are similar. The eligibility requirements have little to no difference. Students applying under the Nigerian Student Express program must in addition to the above-listed points, have a minimum score of 6 each in IELTS Academic.

Here are key points to note when applying for a Canadian study visa:

• THE LETTER OF INTENT

IRCC wants to be sure that you would leave the country after your study year is done. Canada does not take in people that will become liabilities in the country, therefore, the need for students to express their intent while applying for a study visa. Study permits are temporary and have durations attached to them. Visa officers like to be convinced that you will not stay back in the country when you are out of status which is completely illegal.

• PROOF OF FUNDS/FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Proof of financial support is integral to the success of a Canadian study visa application. IRCC wants to be sure that you have the money to pay your tuition fees, cover your living expense, and pay for your trip to Canada. If you are traveling with family members or dependents, you must show that you can cater to their needs.

A six-month bank statement showing your financial status is usually required. If the Canadian government is not convinced that you can support yourself, a refusal is impending. Showing the money does not mean that you will have to spend it. You only need to show the Canadian government that the funds are available to you, should you need them.

• TRAVEL AND IDENTITY DOCUMENT

To get a Canadian study visa, applicants must show a complete record of their travel history and identity documents. Applying with unclear history and documents will automatically lead to a study permit refusal. IRCC uses this to identify those who are criminally and medically inadmissible to Canada. Your records must be clean, easy to read, and as transparent as possible. 

• LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE

You need to have an acceptance letter from a registered Canadian educational institution before you can apply for a study permit. Before applying for a Canadian study visa, you must ensure that the school you were accepted to is on the list of designated learning institutions. Some fake schools are issuing falsified acceptance letters to students. Many of which collect application and tuition fees from students. 

Students are advised to check the DLI list to be sure that they are registered schools. One’s letter of acceptance will be refused once the visa officer realizes that it is not genuine. INTRODUCTION

Your introduction must be contained in 1-2 paragraphs. The writer starts by drawing the reader in with an attention-grabbing opening sentence related to the cause.

 “My parents were never given the opportunity to further their education beyond elementary school level.” At this point, you would have succeeded in getting the attention of the reader. The student will then go ahead to explain how this has influenced his/her decision to further their studies.

In telling us about his parents and how they must have influenced his decision to further his studies, this student sets the tone for the essay. You would then move on to express your driving force and determination to further your education. Could be to get an undergraduate degree, a masters, Ph.D., a diploma or whatever program you are seeking a scholarship for.

Note that for every individual, a different story is told. In writing a scholarship essay, you must be true to yourself and share your own story. What is your driving force?

In writing a scholarship essay, your introductory paragraph must contain a thesis statement. Here, you explain why you think you deserve the scholarship. In doing this, you must make sure that you do not begin to sound overly desperate. “I beg of you; I need this to save my family.” You must maintain poise with a good approach.

Also, introduce your main points that you’ll be expanding on later in your essay.

BODY

This is where you expand on your main points. It is paramount that you back up your information when writing an essay for a scholarship. Back up information shared with examples and facts.

At this point of your essay writing, you are allowed to share more details on how you got to where you are presently. Share your inspiration, interests, and aspirations. You will then go ahead to express the role the scholarship will play in bringing your dreams to actualization.

In expressing your goals and aspiration, be specific. Do not give generic goals. Say something like “this scholarship would help me gain more ground in the field of finance and gear me towards the dream of becoming a financial analyst. I would love to help build the ministry of finance in my country which is currently in total shambles” Rather than merely saying “this scholarship will help gear me towards becoming a financial analyst who will change the world.”

THE BODY OF YOUR SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY MUST ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:

• What has been a significant challenge in your life?
• How did you overcome this?
• What is/are your educational and career goal(s)?
• Why did you choose this particular college or university?
• Why did you choose this field of study?
• How can a scholarship help you achieve your educational goal(s)?
• What are you going to do with your degree?
• How should the scholarship help you achieve your long-term career goal(s)?
• You must provide real-life examples that support the main arguments.

CONCLUSION

The conclusion of your essay should be done in 1 paragraph. You are to explain how winning this scholarship would help you achieve your set goals. It is also advisable that you include the impact this would have on your community and home country. Express how this would also help you give back to your host community back at home or in your country.

YOUR ESSAY CONCLUSION SHOULD CONTAIN:

• A summary of your key points.
• A restatement of your thesis [how the scholarship can help you reach your goal(s)].
• Express gratitude to the scholarship committee for reading your piece.

STUDY INTAKES IN CANADA

Fall intake

Fall intake in Canada is considered the primary study intake for international students to study in Canada. A lot of universities open to international students in the fall season. Normally between September to December, this intake is most preferred by international students. This is a result of the large availability of courses in this intake as compared to others. It also allows students to adapt to the study environment and weather conditions. The weather in fall is much more favorable, compared to the winter period.

Winter Intake

This study intake is usually between January to April. It is generally not a much-preferred intake period for international students. Fall Intake

Applying for internship opportunities is easier for fall students as they most times meet the 9months criteria before applying for an internship. Students also get to work on campus as a researcher or teacher assistants.

Spring Intake

Only a limited number of job offers are available to spring students. Students in this intake face the eligibility problem of 9 months before enrollment to intern in a company.

Summer/Minor Intake

Online courses, vocational courses, and a limited number of other courses are available in this intake. The intake is also less competitive for students.

 International students are advised to put into consideration the weather of the intake period for proper preparation. You wouldn’t want to apply to the January study intake and travel with skimpy clothes thinking it’s the same weather as where you are coming from (if Africa).
